In contrast to the landscapes, which I remember from my early childhood in Northern Europe, the Australian landscape seemed harsh, forbidding and visually imposing. Bushfires, to us, were completely unknown and totally unexpected. In Tasmania we experienced firestorms in the 1960s, which left a lasting impression and no doubt influenced this series.
